India cricket captain Virat Kohli is among the world's highest-paid athletes, according to a Forbes' compilation topped by American boxing champion Floyd Mayweather.

The retired American boxer has taken top spot on the Forbes sports rich list for the fourth time in seven years.

Last year, the only woman on the list was tennis star Serena Williams, who made $27 million, including $19 million from endorsements, ranking No. 51. That stems largely from his bout last August with UFC's Conor McGregor.

Cristiano Ronaldo - top for the past two years - drops to third, with Lionel Messi edging him out of second place after signing a new contract.

Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James ($85.5 million), tennis star Roger Federer ($77.2 million), Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry ($76.9 million), Atlanta Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan ($67.3 million) and Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford ($59.5 million) round out the top 10.

This year 40 National Basketball Association players made the cut in Forbes' annual look at the world's 100 highest-paid athletes, breaking the record of 32 set last year by hoopsters.

Serena Williams, victor of 23 grand slam tennis singles titles, was the sole female representative past year but she has since largely been inactive owing to pregnancy and giving birth to her daughter Alexis in September.

This year the Indian national cricket board "The Board of Control for Cricket in India" named Kohli as one of just five players to receive the newly-created A+ contracts, which guarantee an annual retainer of more than United States dollars 1 million, it said.

Forbes's sporting rich list is created after calculating an athlete's earnings from prize money, salaries and bonuses in the year to 1 June 2018.

Mayweather ($285m) 2. Lionel Messi ($111m) 3.

There are 66 Americans and 40 basketball players on the list.
