The summit's back on: Trump meets N. Korean at White House

US President Donald Trump today met North Korean envoy Kim Yong Chol at the White House, who he delivered a personal letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong-un to the president.

"We talked about nearly everything". "And I think it's probably going to be a very successful - ultimately, a successful process". Pompeo, the former Central Intelligence Agency chief who has traveled to North Korea and met with Kim Jong Un twice in the past two months, said he believed the country's leaders are "contemplating a path forward where they can make a strategic shift, one that their country has not been prepared to make before".

Trump said they had discussed formally ending the Korean War, which has been largely frozen since an armistice ended hostilities, but not the underlying conflict, in 1953. "If we believe that, we will never be able to negotiate with them and make peace with them".

Trump said he spoke with the North Korean envoy, Kim Yong Chol, about sanctions on the reclusive regime.

"He'd like to see it happen".

"The delivery of a letter from Chairman Kim Jong Un to President Trump has apparently broadened and consolidated the road to the North Korea-US summit", said Kim Eui-gyeom, spokesman for South Korea's presidential Blue House.

Yet he also said a news conference that hard work remains including hurdles that may appear to be insurmountable as negotiations progress on the USA demand for North Korea's complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization. He is the highest-ranking North Korean official to visit the U.S.in 18 years, and his trip to the White House will be a highly symbolic sign of easing tensions after fears of war escalated amid North Korean nuclear and missile tests last year. Other analysts believe the video is purely for domestic use as a motivational tool for officials to work harder to improve the wellbeing of the North Korean people. "And we talked about sanctions", he said. "And there is a possibility of something like that". After what Trump said was about a two-hour discussion, the president officially announced that the summit would take place as scheduled.

However, the U.S. leader ruled out signing anything at the June 12 meeting.

Despite the upbeat messaging in the United States, Kim Jong Un, in a meeting with Russia's foreign minister on Thursday, complained about the US trying to spread its influence in the region, a comment that may complicate the summit plans.

After Thursday's talks, Pompeo expressed confidence that the process was moving in the right direction, but warned that the North's young leader must be bold enough to make a "strategic shift" in understanding that he will be safer without nuclear weapons.

The video, allegedly shot in April, depicts North Korean leader Kim Jong-un silently overlooking the ocean with 2 streams of tears falling down his face. "I could be in for a big surprise, folks".

Despite recently envisioning Nobel laurels, Trump worked on Friday to lower expectations for a quick breakthrough.

After exchanging threats and insults since Trump became president a year ago, the United States and North Korea have been trying to set up the summit between their leaders. "If you fall in love with the deal, and it's too important for you to get it, and the details become less significant", McConnell said, "you could get snookered".

Questions remain about what a deal on the North's nuclear weapons would look like.
