Oxford drops to fifth in University world rankings

Oxford drops to fifth in University world rankings

In the newest Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings, published today, UCLA placed No. 2 among US public universities and No. 9 among all universities worldwide, public or private.

Cambridge and Oxford come fourth and fifth in the list respectively, but the number of United Kingdom institutions in the top 100 has dropped from 10 past year.

Top American colleges 'earned their reputations over the whole 20th century and beyond and have not slipped in standard, so they are hard to displace, ' said analyst Simon Marginson.

The US once again dominated the list with 44 institutions in the top 100, while European institutions claimed 33 places in total.

"This should give pause for serious thought as the country seeks to champion its status as "global Britain" in a post-Brexit world", Phil Baty, editorial director of the rankings said.

"This new data shows just how hard it is for emerging powers to break into the traditional global elite", he said. THE noted in its analysis of the survey data that while Asia's leading universities ranked highly, the majority of votes came from academics within the university's home country.

THE described performance across the rest of the region as mixed: “Notably, Australia loses some ground.” While the University of Melbourne fell one place from 46 to joint 47, and the University of Sydney dropped from the 61-70 band to the 71-80 bracket, its third representative, Australian National University, held its position in the 61-70 band.

However, Baty said the stabilization of Chinese universities' rankings is no cause for alarm.

According to THE, its World Reputation Rankings are created using the world's largest invitation-only academic opinion survey - a unique piece of research. It is also evenly spread across academic disciplines, ” THE says. It asks scholars to name no more than 15 universities that they believe are the best for research and teaching in their field, based on their own experience.
