Serena Williams wins on return to Grand Slam tennis

Serena Williams, unseeded in her return to Grand Slam play after giving birth previous year, defeated Kristyna Pliskova, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4.

Williams made her first grand slam outing since the 2017 Australian Open in a straight-sets victory over Kristyna Pliskova, sporting an eye-catching black catsuit. But it wasn't just Williams' return to major championship tennis that caught everyone's attention.

The world No.25 looked like suffering her third consecutive first-round defeat at Roland Garros before turning the match around after a 45-minute rain delay.

Playing her first Major since the birth of daughter Alexis Olympia on September 1, she is determined to show that the competitive fire still burns bright. "No matter what, that's my priority", Williams said after her 7-6 (7-4) 6-4 win over Pliskova.

Williams is a four-time Olympian who has won one Olympic gold in singles and three in doubles with sister Venus Williams.

Gavrilova, the women's 24th seed, battled back from a set and a service break down to defeat Romanian Sorana Cirstea 4-6 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 in a niggly encounter on Tuesday. "It's great to be in this draw and great to be back on a court that I have had great success at".

Coming into this tournament her career prize money stood at more than $84 million.

Still, Williams, 36, struggled with movement throughout much of the match. "What she's done to be able to get back, along with Vika (Azarenka) as well, and a lot of the other girls who are coming back after pregnancy, is a pretty incredible thing".

He blew a 5-2 advantage in the opening set, then a 3-1 buffer in the second.

Duckworth, who missed the French Open past year because of foot surgery, has never won a match at the clay-court event in four appearances.

"I'm happy to have won a match here and I'm just taking it one day at a time".

"So it is definitely a little functionality to it". I know that the WTA are going through all the right processes.

Williams will play her second-round match against 17th-ranked Ashleigh Barty, who is very impressed by her opponent's comeback: "What Serena's done to be able to get back, along with Azarenka as well, and a lot of the other girls who are coming back after pregnancy, is a pretty unbelievable thing".
