Lewis Hamilton calls on Monaco's organisers to ring changes

As is tradition, the Monaco race took place just hours before the Indy 500.

Despite repeatedly warning his team that wasn't convinced the tyres would last to the end, he finally brought the auto home in third, 17 seconds behind race victor Daniel Ricciardo.

He added: "The tyres were not great but we were all driving so slow".

"For sure what we take today is the points, but if you're in Monaco you want to win".

Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix aired live at 9:05 a.m. ET on ESPN and an encore presentation aired on ABC at 3:45 p.m. Sunday afternoon.

A virtual safety auto period ensued, and Ricciardo was the main beneficiary as he emerged five seconds clear of Vettel with just three laps to go. Nor did his rivals feel they could even push to attempt to do so because they were managing their tyres to ensure only one pit stop in order to not lose track position. More so because of the nature of Monaco, where overtaking is next to impossible. "He was a bit stronger, we couldn't follow, and I was going through the tyres a bit quicker".

And then he reported a loss of power. It was reported post-race that Ricciardo's MGU-H suffered a failure and cost him almost 25 percent of his engine power.

Ricciardo made a clean start and stayed in control throughout while at the back, his Red Bull team-mate Verstappen who had failed to qualify after crashing in final practice, made short work of the tail-enders around him on the opening lap.

"Thank God that's over", said Hamilton.

Ricciardo's value has never been higher after he delivered the most dominant weekend of his grand prix career in Monaco.

Hamilton suggested more stops should be mandated for the race. Out went Nico Hulkenberg of Renault in 11th along with Stoffel Vandoorne of McLaren, Russian rookie Sergey Sirotkin of Williams, the impressive Monegasque Charles Leclerc for Sauber and Romain Grosjean of Haas. Kimi Raikkonen, who took pole position a year ago, had to settle for fourth place, just 0.034s off Hamilton and 0.175s clear of the second Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas.

It was a race dominated by tyre conservation. The hypersofts were expected to last 22 laps, but Hamilton chose to do away with his after only 12 laps. This turned out to be Alonso's first DNF this season.

Finishing in second place ahead of Hamilton means that Vettel has closed the gap in the drivers championship to just 14 points.

There is a phase of that race I'm really not proud of.

His auto, needing a new gearbox, could not be repaired in time and he will start from the back of the grid. The Red Bull Racing prodigy, who has committed 6 errors out of 6 races this season, started last after a crash in Free Practice 3 that made his vehicle irreparable for qualifying.

"I spoke to Prince Albert and said that maybe we should make it longer", he said.

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen said the outcome of the Monaco GP was dictated by qualifying.

Ricciardo was asked if he was relieved that he does not need to overtake Verstappen on Sunday. But neither Red Bull driver seemed to have any such troubles with their ultras.

However, Hamilton doesn't see Ricciardo leaving Red Bull anytime soon.

Hamilton thinks Ricciardo's advantage over the young Dutchman puts him in a good position when talking about his future. I don't think that is going to happen.
