Canada to host Global T20 Canada League in June

Disgraced former Australia cricket captain Steve Smith appears poised to return to the game after being named on Thursday among the marquee players for the inaugural Global T20 Canada event.

"Canadian cricket fans will have a great opportunity to see up close numerous world's greatest players, and I'd like to thank International Cricket Council, CWI and the international cricket community for their guidance and support in growing cricket in Canada".

"Global T20 Canada marks the first time a nation with associate member status is launching a league - a major step forward in cricket's global development", Saini said.

Smith joins Shahid Afridi, Dwayne Bravo, Chris Gayle, Chris Lynn, Lasith Malinga, Darren Sammy, Andre Russell, Suni Narine and David Miller as the global headline acts. The ban saw Steve Smith lose his national captaincy and is hence, not allowed to play in global or state cricket.

A cricket West Indies representative team, including Chris Gayle, Andre Russell, Darren Sammy and Dwayne Bravo, will complete the field.

The 28-year-old was stripped of the captaincy and handed a 12-month suspension from worldwide cricket for his role in the Cape Town Test ball-tampering scandal in March.

These include Edmonton Royals, Montreal Tigers, Toronto Nationals, Vancouver Knights and Winnipeg Hawks.

The teams will play 22 matches culminating in playoffs and a championship match will be held on July 16.

He and David Warner each received 12-month bans from Cricket Australia (CA), while Cameron Bancroft was suspended for nine months.

"Canadian cricket fans will have a great opportunity to see up close numerous world's greatest players, and I'd like to thank International Cricket Council, CWI and the international cricket community for their guidance and support in growing cricket in Canada", concluded Saini. Also, he is banned from playing the BBL this season. "He will be great in the changing rooms with younger players".

The league has a strong West Indian flavour. The former Australia vice-captain will play for Randwick Petersham, his club in Sydney.
