Fueled by video nasties and sleepless nights, Unai Emery is ready for the challenge of succeeding Arsene Wenger after being appointed as Arsenal's first new boss for 22 years.

Speaking at his unveiling, Emery explained how he's succeeded in big projects before and he will do so again at Arsenal.

Emery already has one thing in common with Wenger after making clear his disdain for the Frenchman's old rival Jose Mourinho.

The Spaniard, who won the domestic treble with PSG this season, emerged as the shock favourite to replace Arsene Wenger earlier this week after it had appeared former Arsenal captain Mikel Arteta was in line to land the job at the Emirates.

"All of those eight people that we approached, that we targeted, were interested in the position and all of those eight people took part in an extensive, in-person interviews with us and none of them at any stage withdrew their interest".

Emery has agreed to work within the new structure and he knows that the club will operate on a £50 million transfer budget next season.

"Unai has an outstanding track record of success throughout his career, has developed some of the best young talent in Europe and plays an exciting, progressive style of football that fits Arsenal perfectly", said Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis following the appointment.

The club will be desperate to re-establish themselves among the Premier League elite.

Martin, you've nailed it. Arsenal's midfield now lacks steel, even with Granit Xhaka in the side, and Verratti is exactly the kind of player who can change that.

"I still haven't had an opportunity to meet him". The target is to be a candidate and to challenge for the title.

It's a curious statement considering many Arsenal fans will be keen for a quick turnaround after the club finished fifth and sixth in the Premier League, respectively, during the final two years on Wenger's watch. "[Next season] we will try to play our best".

"My idea is to be the protagonist all the match".

"The formal recommendation to the board was supported by a 100-page dossier with references, analysis, videos showing their coaching in action and a great degree of background information", Gazidis said.

"I think we need to understand that success isn't instant".

The pair talked late into Tuesday night and then had a three-hour meeting yesterday morning in the Italian capital.

Gazidis noted that Emery always improved his teams.
