Mikel Arteta has "all of the qualities" required to become Arsenal manager, according the club's legendary former handler Arsene Wenger.

Arsene Wenger admits not signing five-time Ballon d'Or victor Cristiano Ronaldo remains his biggest regret during his tenure at Arsenal while revealing he tried to sign two current FC Barcelona superstars.

"I think all of them could manage Arsenal", Pires said in an interview with BT Sport.

"He was a leader, has a good passion for the game, knows the club and knows what is important at the club", Wenger said.

Arteta has worked in the shadows of Pep Guardiola for the past two years, while Henry has been assistant manager at Belgium since August 2016.

Arsenal have also contacted another former captain, Patrick Vieira, as part of the process to replace Wenger.

Mikel Arteta is now the assistant coach at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

And despite his lack of experience in management, Arteta's former boss thinks he's got what it takes.

Wenger, believes he could benefit from his first-team coaches like Steve Bould and Jens Lehman.

The Frenchman ended his tenure at the north London club after 22-years at the helm and with the club now looking to bring in an able successor, Arteta has emerged as the leading candidate.

"Unfortunately some of the other staff left".

The Manchester City assistant coach, though, ticks the boxes of what Arsenal are looking for from their new manager.

"But I don't want to influence it publicly and it's important they make their choice objectively and once they make the decision, I will support it".
