The invitation followed a night-long court-room battle where the Supreme Court, hearing the pleas by Congress and the JD (S), refused to stay the swearing-in ceremony.

State Gov. Vajubhai Vala invited the BJP on Wednesday to form the government after it emerged as the single largest party in the state legislature following the May 12 poll.

"Our plan now is to safeguard our lawmakers (from poaching)", he said.

In his argument that ran for more than an hour, Singhvi also cited instances of Meghalaya, Manipur, Goa, Delhi, Jharkhand and Jammu and Kashmir as precedents of post-poll alliances being invited to form governments.

A successful outcome is key to rejuvenate party members and reverse Modi's declining popularity after several local defeats in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Rajasthan.

"It is unheard of to give 15 days for floor test. Elementary common sense and arithmetic go against this kind of giving of time", Singhvi said.

Attorney General K.K. Venugopal, appearing for the Centre, said everything was in the realm of "speculation" as the entire matter was still "a grey area".

PM Modi thanked the people of Karnataka and assured them that the BJP will leave no stone unturned in charting the development journey of the state. "Why wait for 15 days?"

Throughout the hearing, Singhvi, who took the longest time to put forth his points, remained sharp while it was apparent that octogenarian Venugopal was worn out having been woken up from his sleep.

The three-judge bench that heard the matter expressed surprise.
