"Today, we should all be very thankful to school resource officer Mark Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a unsafe situation at Dixon High School", Governor Bruce Rauner said in a tweet.

A student was shot at an IL high school Wednesday after he began firing at a security officer, authorities said.

According to the city of Dixon website, the school resource officer position was started by the Dixon Police Department in 2000 to help prevent school violence. "His courageous actions saved a lot of lives". "While shots were ringing out through the hallways of the school, he charged towards the suspect and confronted him head on". "We are forever indebted to him for his service and his bravery".

During the chase, the suspect fired several rounds at the school resource officer.

The identities of the school officer and the 19-year old suspect have not yet been released.

"Today, we should all be very thankful to school resource officer Mark Dallas for his bravery and quick action to immediately diffuse a unsafe situation at Dixon High School", Rauner wrote on Twitter.

The armed teen fled from the responding officer, allegedly firing shots as he ran.

"We want social workers just as much as the schools do, but we don't want it to be an either-or situation", Winters said, adding that the Illinois Police Chiefs Association was initially opposed to the bill, but has shifted its stance to neutral since another amendment was made. He continued by saying that the officer's courage undoubtedly saved many lives by keeping a risky situation from escalating. He was taken into custody and treated for his wound, which city officials said was not life-threatening. They did exactly what they had been trained to do by barricading themselves in their classrooms using chairs, desks, and other furniture.

No other students or staff were injured in the incident.

Authorities also attribute the lack of injuries with the training students have received that teaches them what to do in case of an active shooter on school grounds.

Dixon High School and all Dixon public schools were placed on lockdown following the shooting.

The incident on Wednesday was "horrific", Simonton said. "Matthew told us he got beat up down here, they broke his jaw".
