The former England manager knew it was coming as talks were planned with majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri. He had a year to run on his contract.

Such friction has also been evident on the terraces during Allardyce's spell, with his dismissal on Wednesday serving to underline the extent to which he became a divisive presence in several different areas of the club. Silva is now favourite to take over, having been dismissed by Watford in January, with the Hornets blaming Everton's "unwarranted approach" for leading to a significant deterioration in results and focus.

"Everton Football Club can confirm that Sam Allardyce has left his role as manager", read the statement.

At times, he has taken credit for wins, but deflected the blame from himself for the team's poor displays, often directing the blame towards the players.

The Daily Express adds that former Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has emerged as a "shock candidate" while Leicester's Claude Puel and Burnley's Sean Dyche are also in the running. Diminishing ambition - even if it is hard to meet that expectation - has never sat well on the blue half of Merseyside.

Who will next the next man in the Toffees dugout?

But Allardyce was not a popular appointment among Everton fans and rumblings of discontent grew ever louder after a positive start.

Fonseca was another who was linked with the job in November before Allardyce was appointed. However, Watford refused the former Olympiakos boss permission to speak to the Merseysiders. Instead, he is leaving yet another Premier League club.

Finalising a deal for Silva is Everton's priority and the process will be overseen by Marcel Brands, who was confirmed as director of football after arriving from PSV Eindhoven.

Shakhar Donetsk coach Paulo Fonseca is another option for the Merseyside club. The 45-year-old has won his won the domestic double for the second straight season in Ukraine but is out of contract with Shakhtar. Walsh's signings from last summer led to a shocking loss of form in the Premier League that at one stage saw them looking like relegation contenders.
