Trump Melania is ‘doing really well’ after kidney surgery

The first word of Mrs. Trump's health troubles came from her communications director, Stephanie Grisham, who announced in a statement Monday that President Donald Trump's wife, 48, had successfully underdone a kidney procedure and would likely remain hospitalized for the rest of the week as she recovers.

"I want to start by saying that Melania is in the hospital doing really well". The president spoke with Mrs. Trump before the procedure and with her doctor afterward, the first lady's office said.

She underwent the surgery at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre in Bethesda, New York Post reported. "I'm pleased to report the procedure as a success and Melania is already on the mend".

Trump had tweeted earlier Tuesday that the first lady "will be leaving hospital in 2 or 3 days". Vice President Mike Pence, however, described the procedure as "long planned" during a speech Monday night in Washington.

She is the first to go through a serious medical procedure since October 1987 when then-first lady Nancy Reagan had a mastectomy. She later accompanied the president to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to welcome home three Americans who had been detained in North Korea.

They're not common but tend to occur in middle-aged women and can cause problematic bleeding if they become large enough, said Dr. Keith Kowalczyk of MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.

The president had no public appearances scheduled for Monday and declined to answer shouted questions from reporters about how his wife was feeling as he departed the White House for Walter Reed.

During the procedure, "an interventional radiologist uses imaging guidance to insert a catheter into a primary artery and advance it to blood vessel leading to a tumor or other area where the bloody supply needs to be blocked", Cancer Treatment Centers of America explains on its website. "We pray for her speedy and full recovery, and he look forward to her returning to her work making a difference in the lives of our nation's children".

"The First Lady is in good spirits and she is resting".

Mrs. Trump has, at times, has been noticeably absent from her husband's side but both made a point of displaying affection during last week's Rose Garden event.
