Mike Pompeo paves the way in Pyongyang for Trump-Kim summit

"Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is on his way back to the U.S. with three American detainees", President Donald Trump announced Wednesday.

In a follow-up tweet, Trump said that he will be meeting them when they arrive at Andrews Air Force Base at 2 a.m. EST.

Pompeo had traveled to North Korea on Wednesday to prepare the groundwork for an upcoming meeting between Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un.

Moon said the three countries agreed to highlight unity as the two Koreas moved towards a permanent peace settlement.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, the US President also ruled out meeting Mr Kim at the demilitarised zone which separates North and South Korea.

North Korean officials arrested a year ago the other two American hostages, who were both teachers in Pyongyang, when they tried to leave the country at different times.

Kim Dong-chul, a South Korea-born American businessman and pastor who is in his 60s, was sentenced to 10 years' hard labor in April 2016 after being charged with subversion and espionage.

They did agree to fully implement various economic sanctions against North Korea as laid out in resolutions passed by the U.N. Security Council. He had been doing agricultural development work at the research farm of Pyongyang University of Science and Technology and was living in Pyongyang. He was detained last May for alleged anti-state activities.




He has also previously cited Singapore as another possible site. He taught accounting at PUST. He was later accused of attempting to overthrow the North Korean government. Some observers said on social media that the slipup - which came on the same day that Mr. Kim was visiting China - was an insult that showed a lack of United States preparation for the planned Trump-Kim summit meeting. We will update as more information becomes available. "We ask that you continue to pray for the people of North Korea and for the release of all who are still being held".

January 9: North and South Korean officials meet in the border village of Panmunjom, and agree on North Korea sending athletes and delegates to the Winter Olympics taking place in the South the following month.

"He was a very diligent, hardworking man determined to help people in North Korea", his friend David Kim told CNN.

Trump's announcement comes one day after Trump officially withdrew the United States from the Iran nuclear deal, a decision his predecessor condemned as "so misguided". The meeting is expected to happen later this month or in early June.

Pompeo, who first traveled to North Korea as Central Intelligence Agency chief in early April, is only the second sitting secretary of state to visit the reclusive nation with which the USA is still technically at war. Shortly afterward, the White House released photographs of Pompeo and Kim. "Date & Place set", the president said in a tweet.

March 9: Trump accepts Kim's invitation to meet, which the White House says will take place by the end of May. Trump and Kim have exchanged insults and threats over the past year but tensions have eased in recent months.

He is a South Korean-born USA businessman and pastor arrested in October 2015. The US State Department has pledged to confront North Korea over human rights, but in inter-Korean talks, the subject has largely been avoided.
