Businessman Mike Braun wins Indiana GOP Senate primary

Throughout the bruising GOP campaign, Braun, 64, depicted himself as a political outsider in the mold of President Donald Trump while describing Messer and Rokita as career politicians and "swamp brothers".

Wealthy businessman Mike Braun won the three-way GOP race for the right to challenge Joe Donnelly, who's considered one of the most vulnerable Senate Democrats on the ballot this year.

Despite the almost constant barrage of attack ads on TV and the candidates' many caustic exchanges at four debates, Braun thanked his Republican rivals and even called them "stand up fellas" in his statement.

Now Messer, a darling of Indiana's GOP establishment, and Rokita, who has been in elected office since 2003, will both be out of jobs come next year, after giving up their safe Republican seats to run for Senate.

Trump has not endorsed in the primary, so his supporters are found in different camps.

Messer additionally shrugged off the advert saying, "If Mike Braun is outdoors something, he's outdoors the Republican Occasion". His rivals have asked who he voted for in the 2008 Democratic primary race between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, but Braun claims he voted for neither.

"When he's in IN he acts like one of us, but in Washington he votes against us, against President Trump and in lockstep with the Democrats", Mr. Braun said. We need someone who will support the kinds of things that have made IN a leading state for job creation, financial strength and stability, and workforce development. I've long said that we need to see less of Washington in IN, and more of in IN Washington.

"We spent about what we figured it would take", Braun said.

The Jasper Republican, who owns an auto parts distribution empire, largely self-funded his campaign as he positioned himself as the political outsider in the race.

More than 3.3 million Kentuckians are registered to vote in the May 22 primary elections, a net increase of about 62,000 voters since the 2016 general election.

The primary features two sitting congressman and a former state representative who all have tried to position themselves as the most Trump-like, and the most conservative. The candidates have resorted to mocking one another with ugly nicknames throughout the campaign. something the party hopes they can put behind them by November, but for this primary has frustrated some voters.

It's been a busy primary season. "It's a Republican state, but it's hard to beat an incumbent".

Senate candidates Todd Rokita, from left, Luke Messer and Mike Braun speak with each other following the Indiana Republican Senate Primary Debate, Monday, April 30, 2018, in Indianapolis.

The only man now standing in Braun's way is incumbent Senator Joe Donnelly. "He's got a track record of delivering results, and he'll provide the firewall to prevent obstructionist Democrats from causing even more gridlock in Washington".

The three contests herald a wave of primaries in the coming weeks in critical states such as Pennsylvania, California, Iowa, and New Jersey that will help determine whether Democrats can pick up two seats in the Senate and 23 seats in the House of Representatives in November to take control of Congress.

Some questioned whether Braun's history voting for Democrats would come back to haunt him.

Tonight, I'm excited to offer my support to Mike Braun, and I invite you to join me.
