Waymo van involved in serious collision in Arizona

"Today while testing our self-driving vehicle in Chandler, Arizona, another auto traveling in an oncoming lane swerved across the median and struck our minivan", Waymo told SlashGear in a statement this evening.

"Today while testing our self-driving vehicle in Chandler, Arizona, another auto traveling in an oncoming lane swerved across the median and struck our minivan", Waymo said in a statement to SlashGear. As the Honda swerved, it entered the westbound lanes of Chandler Boulevard and ended up hitting the Waymo minivan.

The crash between the Waymo self-driving vehicle and the Honda sedan again proves that the technology is still in its early phase.

Video from the Waymo minivan shows the Honda coming at it. The Waymo self-driving auto was said to be travelling at a low speed which minimised the impact of the crash. The video shows the auto that struck the Waymo vehicle drove through an intersection at the same time a auto in the adjacent side was entering the intersection.

This isn't the first self-driving vehicle accident for Waymo. "Both the Waymo Vehicle and the Honda were towed from the scene. The accident is under investigation".

The accident occurred less than two months after a self-driving Uber SUV struck and killed a pedestrian in nearby Tempe. Local police have said there were minor injuries from the incident after a sedan swerved into the Waymo van to avoid another collision, ABC 15 reported.

"The Waymo vehicle was in autonomous mode and had an occupant sitting in the driver's seat", Tyler told Newsweek.

Accidents involving self-driving vehicles have raised questions over whether the technology is ready for testing with the public.
