2018 iPhones may not come with free headphone dongle

The decision to ditch the headphone jack was met with much unhappiness, and many companies outside of Apple have since followed suit. "We now model no dongle this year", the analysts noted.

In a note to investors seen by MacRumors, Blayne Curtis wrote: "We now model no dongle this year". While Apple is thought of as the first company to remove the 3.5mm headphone jack on its smartphones, the first handsets released sans the jack were actually the LeEco Le 2, Le 2Pro and Le Max2. The move was controversial, but Apple reasoned that people were increasingly turning to wireless headphones and the headphone jack was an outdated technology. It allows users to continue to use their corded headphones with newer iPhone models. However, at launch, users wouldn't be able to listen to music and charge the iPhone at the same time, since they'd both use the same port. The adapter can still be purchased from Apple (or most retailers) for United States dollars $9, which says a lot about the production costs. Its Beats headphone subsidiary, however, has long focused its efforts on wireless headphones.

Not including the adapter could push customers to buy Apple's wireless AirPod earbuds.

AirPods are also an improvement over the bundled EarPods now shipped with iPhone handsets. It does, however, mean that users will need to buy adapters separately to plug in their headphones. Specifically, Barclays analysts believe that Apple's upcoming iPhone models will not ship with a headphone jack adapter in the box. While we were happy to receive the adapter included with recent generations of phones, it appears as if Apple is trying to force people to hop on the Bluetooth bandwagon or shell out for the privilege to use their existing equipment.
