Volkswagen and its Electrify America unit announced plans to install 2,000 fast chargers at 500 stations across the country by the end of 2019.

ABB has provided charging solutions as part of its drive to promote sustainable mobility since 2010 and has sold more than 6,000 cloud connected DC fast-chargers around the world for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. Needless to say, VW is future-proofing the investment. The company claims their fast chargers will be "seven times faster" than other charging solutions around today. The company is investing 2 billion USA dollars over the next 10 years in electric vehicle infrastructure and education to deploy more than 2,000 chargers across 484 sites in 17 metropolitan areas and on highways in 39 US states. While you may think that the 100 stores are nothing compared to Walmart's over 5,000 store network, it's a great start.

If you're wondering when you can take advantage of VW's upcoming charging stations for yourself, Electrify America hopes to finish the project by June 2019, though they haven't offered any details regarding pricing just yet. By having charging stations at as many large retailers as possible, you'll be likely to use your EV more often and not have to worry that you don't have enough juice left in your vehicle.

Not only should this give electric vehicle drivers a convenient place to charge while they buy groceries and other essentials, it may also play an important role in making fast electric auto chargers a common sight for mainstream American Walmart shoppers.

The Walmart stations also will have at least one Level 2 AC chargers for vehicles that can not plug into quick-chargers. The announcement is expected to make Walmart one of the leading electric vehicle charging station hosts in the United States retail sector. Some of these chargers, though, will reportedly be fast chargers.

EV owners can manage their charging session with a smartphone via the Electrify America app, so customers can plug, pay, charge and go with greater convenience.

Not all EVs and PHEVs will be able to use the maximum power offered by the Electrify America technology, so, for some, charging times will be significantly slower.

At its annual Sustainability Milestone Summit, Walmart Inc. has revealed plans to more than double its EV charging station sites through the addition of several hundred charging stalls across its operations in 34 states.

Volkswagen is giving electric power to more people with its recent announcement of EV charging station expansion.

. "EV owners need a convenient, reliable and fast turnaround in recharging their vehicles".

The systems to be installed in the parking lots will not all be fast chargers, though. Those who ordered Teslas before December 2016 were grandfathered into the free fast-charging network of Superchargers.
