According to The Washington Post, Comey writes that the president told him: "I'm a germaphobe".

Comey himself admits in his new book, "A Higher Loyalty: Truth, Lies, and Leadership", that he was shocked Trump won.

On Sunday, before the ABC interview aired, Comey tweeted that his book draws on stories from his life and from lessons he has learned from others. CNN's Anderson Cooper will host a town hall with Comey on April 25.

The pre-launch brouhaha is based on media reports about what's in the book, "A Higher Loyalty".

In a clip released Saturday by ABC News, George Stephanopoulos asks Comey about his motivations in revealing that information to Congress.

"He is a weak and untruthful slime ball who was, as time has proven, a awful Director of the FBI", Trump added in a second tweet.

Just a few hours before James Comey's first television appearance ahead of his new book's release, President Trump published a string of tweets calling Comey a "slimeball" and saying the notes the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director says he took were "fake".

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders joined in the criticism by tweeting a link to a video from the Republican National Committee accusing Comey of lacking credibility.

Hillary Clinton was expected to win the White House race when then-FBI Director James Comey (r.) ordered another investigation into her email use.

In his tweet, Mr Trump says: "Unbelievably, James Comey states that Polls, where Crooked Hillary was leading, were a factor in the handling (stupidly) of the Clinton Email probe".

Trump also repeated his belief that the notes Comey says he took about his interactions with the president are "FAKE!" and that Comey is lying when he says the president asked him for loyalty.

"It was my great honor to fire James Comey!".

Given all this, it is mildly surprising that Comey's tell-all book withholds judgment on Trump's early presidency as a question of law.

Asked how freakish that meeting with Trump was, Comey said: "Very weird".

Mr Trump disputed the claim on Twitter. In the clip, Comey characterizes the situation as surreal.

"I honestly thought these words would never come out of my mouth, but I don't know whether the current president of the United States was with prostitutes peeing on each other in Moscow in 2013".

There is no indication that any such tape exists, and Trump has pushed back against the allegation. 'You will always get honesty from me, ' I said. "He reportedly writes that he was aware of "'unverified" information discovered by the US government in 2016 from a classified source [that] "would undoubtedly have been used by political opponents to cast serious doubt on the attorney general's independence in connection with the Clinton investigation'". Sessions' recusal from the Russian Federation investigation led to Rosenstein appointing Mueller.

The book also speculates about Mr. Trump's refusal to acknowledge Russia's attempt to influence the election.
