After his near-miss with Hamilton cost him a shot at victory, Verstappen recovered well - until he attempted to pass Vettel for third place.

Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas appeared on course for an excellent victory over Vettel before the safety vehicle period after the Finn jumped the Ferrari during their pit stops.

The result means Vettel's lead in the championship over Hamilton has been cut to nine points, with Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who finished second, only three behind the Briton and Ricciardo a further three behind the Finn.

What Ricciardo was referring to was the turbo failure he suffered in final practice on Saturday which left his team scrambling to change his engine before qualifying.

"We really thought we were going to start the race from the back, just over 24 hours later to be here now... this sport's insane".

And Ricciardo made full use of his extra grip, making sensational overtakes on Lewis Hamilton, Vettel and race leader Valtteri Bottas to move to the front, after Verstappen gave up fourth place to the Australian in a scrape with the defending champion.

Verstappen crossed the line fourth, but that turned into fifth as the stewards handed him a 10-second penalty for hitting Vettel.

Ricciardo dived in for new soft tyres with 23 laps remaining, while erstwhile leader Bottas and his main challenger Sebastian Vettel stayed out on mediums having passed the pitlane entry before the safety vehicle was deployed. "They are all pretty fun but that was unexpected".

Ultimately, though, the day belonged to Ricciardo, and while his sixth Grand Prix win may have been aided by a favorable safety auto period, his consummate drive to victory was littered with a series of clinical overtaking moves, and was all the more satisfying after an engine failure on Saturday limited his running earlier in the weekend. "Today is the real reward for that work".

"At the rate we were going through the field, and I could feel the tyres were holding on well, I was obviously fully set on the win". That's why I sent Chris Gent - the No. 1 mechanic on Daniel's vehicle - up (to the podium) today because those guys have earned us that result.

It got better for Ricciardo on lap 42, as he made a DRS-assisted move past Vettel to move up to second. "We were giving everything we had and it kind of felt like we deserved victory". I have got to rectify that and get back into normal performance mode otherwise more points will be lost. Max Verstappen (Red Bull) +20,4366. Gasly said: "The team told me "Brendon is going to let you pass at the end of the straight", so I expected him to let me by".

"We had the soft tire, I knew I could get more out that them, you only get on chance to try so I had to take the opportunity", he said. Daniel's 28. He's got a lot of experience behind him. We were in trouble then really and it is disappointing.
