Bon Jovi Performs with Richie Sambora and More 2018 Rock Hall Highlights

Bon Jovi were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night (April 15) at a ceremony in Cleveland. "Performing for the first time in years with original guitarist Richie Sambora, the band played hits such as "Livin" on a Prayer", "You Give Love a Bad Name" and "It's My Life".

Singer-songwriter and civil rights activist Nina Simone, who died in 2003 aged 70, was inducted by Mary J Blige, who called the unique performer "the High Priestess of Soul", adding that she "could sing anything" but that "everything she sang she made her own". During an In Memoriam tribute, old photos of deceased rock "n' rollers showed as part of a video treatment, and Heart singer Ann Wilson and Alice in Chains guitarist Jerry Cantrell performed a rendition of the Soundgarden song "Black Hole Sun" as a tribute to Soundgarden Chris Cornell, a close friend of Wilson's who passed away a year ago".

The Moody Blues, the Cars, Dire Straits, Nina Simone and Sister Rosetta Tharpe were also inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Wilson of Heart said the English rockers "are and have always been a kick ass rock band".

Dire Straits lead singer Mark Knopfler isn't attending the event. In an interview ahead of the event, co-founding member and bassist John Illsley said Mark "just didn't feel like coming, it's as simple as that". Some days, I write the "Thank you" speech. "It's personal reasons, let's just leave it at that", Illsley continued.

Later during his acceptance speech, Illsley credited Knopfler with writing the band's timeless songs. Alabama Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard and guitarist Felicia Collins (who plays guitar in the Marie & Rosetta stage show) performed in honour of another 2018 inductee, Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Howard was backed by an equally appealing Questlove of The Roots on the drums.

"It's been long overdue". She influenced countless musicians, including hip-hop artists Jay-Z, Kanye West and others who first discovered her from a 2015 Oscar-nominated documentary. The very few boys who took me on dates in those days were instantaneously upstaged if "Nights in White Satin" or "Dawn Is a Feeling" came on the vehicle radio. "It's a bit weird, but life's odd", he said.

Flowers of the Killers, who has covered The Cars' songs at his live shows, was ecstatic and energetic as he inducted the band into the Rock Hall, even getting on his knee to hand the members their award as they walked onstage. But while he was excited about the Rock Hall honors, Ocasek downplayed the chance for a future Cars album without Benjamin Orr. "Without Cleveland, what the (expletive) is rock and roll?" said Van Zandt, who received quite the audience response.

The ceremony will air as an edited special on HBO May 5, but you can also see their backstage press room chat below.
